An abscess is an infection in your tooth caused by bacteria. The infection may start out as minor pain or discomfort, but as it the infection gets worse and develops into an abscess, you can experience a fever, swelling, pain, and a bad taste and smell if the abscess starts to drain into your mouth. If left untreated, an abscess can start to damage the jaw bone and the other tissues.

An abscess can have a number of causes. Poor oral hygiene is one cause. If you don’t brush twice a day and floss once a day, your mouth you risk an infection. Cavities can allow abscesses to form, and tiny cracks in your tooth can allow bacteria to penetrate and create an infection.

Our dentists may prescribe an antibiotic to deal with the infection. The dentist may need to clean the area between your tooth and your gums, or even perform a root canal. Then they may repair the damage with a filling, or crown. Of course, the best way to avoid an abscess is to practice good oral hygiene. This means brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and seeing the dentist for you routine appointments.
