Brushing and flossing is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. At Englehardt & Nelson Family Dentistry, we focus on the correct ways of brushing and flossing, as well as the best toothbrush and toothpaste to ensure the best clean. To ensure a proper clean, brush at a 45-degree angle, so it gets the gums, as well, as the tops; then, use side-to-side strokes; finally, reach up and under the back of teeth, where food can often hide. When you are finished, clean your brush. You may have been told to cover your brush. to prevent bacteria from forming, but the ADA actually warns against this, saying it can actually breed new bacteria. Rinsing the brush after each use and allowing it to dry is enough. Just don’t allow other kids to use the same toothbrush – even your own.
Also, be sure to change your brush. This is a crucial tip to take seriously. Because bristles can deteriorate with time, you may not be getting the best clean. It is best to replace your toothbrush, or if you use an electric one, the head, every three to four months. You may even wait until your semiannual checkup for a better reminder. Brush for at least two minutes, by singing the alphabet a few times or listening to a short favorite song. When looking for a toothbrush, it’s best to find one that has small enough bristles to fit into the crevices of your teeth, as well as soft bristles for more sensitive teeth. The toothpaste should have the ADA Seal of Acceptance labeled on it, and it should contain fluoride.
